Making Of "Nano tec spot"

AEZ wanted to do something special for the market launch of the new dirt- and water-adhesive Nano tec-coat. A short film should describe the properties of this innovative invention and explain the physics behind the Nano tec-effect.

These topics were picked up in the creative process of collecting ideas and provided a basis for the definition of the scenes. The concept was discussed in the team and adapted to the individual ideas.

The next step was the recording of the scenes. The spot was produced at three different locations.
Scene 1: Driving over a wet track
Location 1: ÖAMTC test area Teesdorf
Date: 23.02.06

A camera crane was used to record the car from bird view driving over the watered track. For the close-up view of the wheel the camera team positioned itself under a waterproof cover and grabbed pictures through a splash guard.

Scene 2: Close-up view of the car
Location 2: Photo studio company Dopplinger
Date: 24.02.06

Before the recordings could start people had to clean the studio, paint it in white and adjust the lighting system. The necessary equipment, from spotlights to lighting assistants, was borrowed from the studio for a fee.

For macro recording without jerks you need a “steady cam” which is a huge mobile pivot mounting for the camera carried by the cameraman. It’s a very expensive device only an experienced cameraman is able to employ. The alternative is a “dolly” – a movable camera on rails. The latter was used in the spot.

The slow-motion recordings were done with an optical adapter due to the camera not being able to sequentially shoot pictures fast enough. If the camera doesn’t meet these technical requirements you won’t be able to reproduce fluent motions.
Scene 3: Explaining the physical properties of the Nano tec-coat
Location 3: Photo studio company Bitesnich
Date: 25.02.06

To show the roll off-effect vinegar was sprayed on a wheel with Nano tec-lacquering. Because you can often observe this physical effect in nature a leaf was chosen as object of comparison. The visualization was done with glycerine, baby oil and a pipette.

For the close-up shots the wheel lay on a rotatable plexiglass plate lighted from below. The atomized spray came from an ordinary aerosol can.

Scene 4: Completing and cutting the film
„Location 4“: at the PC
Date: 26.02.06 and following

The view over the tarmac track was animated and fully produced at the computer. It was quite tricky to remove the reflections of the camera from the wet ground and the mirroring car lacquer. A picture editing software was of good use hereby. The soundtrack was recorded in a sound studio and inserted according to the cuts.

The recording process was documented (415 KB) in a PDF file.

The final film can be downloaded (21,7 MB) from our website.
